Darkthrone have been bogans to the left, bogans to the right, and bogans to the left again for over 30 years now. And they show no signs of slowing down on their latest release, "Circle the Wagons." The Norwegian duo, made up of Fenriz and Nocturno Culto, have honed their signature blackened punk sound to a fine point on this album. From the opening riff of "Those Treasures Will Never Befall You" to the closing howls of "Canadian Metal," Darkthrone deliver a non-stop barrage of thrashy guitar riffs, pounding drums, and snarling vocals. But don't let the aggression fool you - there's a playful streak running through "Circle the Wagons" that makes it impossible to resist. Whether it's the cheeky nods to classic rock on "I Am the Graves of the 80s" or the infectious hooks of "I, Pagan," there's a sense of fun and mischief that permeates every track. Darkthrone may not take themselves too seriously, but their music is deadly serious. "Circle the Wagons" is a wild ride through the dark and twisted world of black metal, and it's one that you won't want to get off anytime soon.
