De acordo com a Avaliação Nacional de Alfabetização (ANA), divulgada pelo Ministério da Educação (MEC), com base nos resultados de 2016, mais da metade dos alunos do 3º ano do ensino fundamental têm nível insuficiente em provas de leitura e matemática. Os estudantes não conseguem identificar a finalidade de um texto e localizar uma informação explícita. No caso da escrita, 34% estão no pior patamar, sendo incapazes de escrever as palavras de maneira alfabética e produzindo textos ilegíveis. Esses dados são alarmantes e apontam para a urgência de uma reestruturação nas políticas públicas voltadas à alfabetização e ao letramento. Trazem ainda preocupação sobre a inserção social e profissional dessas crianças, que em breve se defrontarão com a vida adulta e o mercado de trabalho, que exigirá cada vez mais que as pessoas sejam capazes de ler e interpretar não apenas textos, mas o mundo e a realidade em que vivem.
