Band of Horses' Infinite Arms is like a charmingly erratic horse galloping through a field of indie rock clichés. With a sound that's as breezy as a British summer day (rare, I know), this album manages to capture both the melancholy and euphoria of life in one fell swoop. From the opening track, "Factory," it's clear that Band of Horses are aiming for the anthemic heights of bands like Arcade Fire and Fleet Foxes. And while they don't quite reach those lofty peaks, they certainly make a valiant effort. Songs like "Compliments" and "Laredo" are catchy and infectious, with hooks that burrow themselves deep into your subconscious. But it's on tracks like "Older" and "Evening Kitchen" where Band of Horses truly shine. The raw emotion and vulnerability in Ben Bridwell's vocals are enough to bring a tear to even the coldest hipster's eye. It's like a warm hug from an old friend, comforting and familiar. Infinite Arms may not reinvent the wheel, but it doesn't need to. It's a solid album from a band that knows their strengths and plays to them well. So grab a bottle of your finest craft beer, put on your flannel shirt, and enjoy the ride. Just don't forget to mumble something about how you liked their earlier stuff better.
