A fresh, easygoing Chardonnay from a top Aussie producer that packs plenty of flavour at a brilliant price point. Light in body but creamy in texture, it opens with juicy notes of ripe peach, pineapple and a zing of citrus. Soft and round, without tipping into heavy or oaky. Berton Vineyards was founded in 1996 by Bob and Cherie Berton, who took a bold leap by planting vines in High Eden—one of the highest and most remote parts of the Barossa Valley, sitting 450 metres above sea level. Early days were tough: no water, uncooperative soils, and stubborn little vines that just wouldn’t grow. Their Swedish friends cheekily dubbed it the "Bonsai Vineyard," a name that stuck—and now proudly adorns their flagship Shiraz. Things turned a corner in 1998 with the addition of a dam, and the vineyard expanded beyond Chardonnay and Shiraz to include Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon. In 2005, Bob and Cherie joined forces with three long-time friends—Paul Bartholomaeus, Jamie Bennett and James Ceccato—and set up a full production facility in Yenda, New South Wales. From there, Berton Vineyards has gone from strength to strength. Today, they’re known for a “less is more” approach in the vineyard, focusing on minimal intervention and site expression. They’re also one of Australia’s more progressive producers when it comes to sustainability. From high-tech ion exchange systems that cut energy use, to lightweight packaging and clever temperature management, they've reduced energy usage by 43% since 2011 and are certified members of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia. Characterful wines, a resilient spirit, and a genuine commitment to doing things better—Berton is a brilliant example of modern Aussie winemaking.
