2020 Mar de Frades Finca Valinas Albarino
Finca Valiñas is Mar de Frades' most singular wine, described by the estate as one of the finest and most sought-after Albariños in Spain. It begins life on a single, distinctive 2.2-hectare vineyard of the same name, perched at 127 metres in the Val do Salnés, where sandstone and granite soils drain freely and old vines, planted in 1975 and trained on the traditional pergola system, have settled into a natural, self-regulating balance between vigour and yield. What makes Finca Valiñas different isn't just the site, but the patience behind it. Grapes are hand-picked in small crates, chilled, gently destemmed and macerated under inert gas without added sulphur, to protect the wine's aromatic precursors. Fermentation runs slow, with indigenous yeasts, before the wine settles onto its fine lees for an extended period of ageing, with regular bâtonnage, that stretches across several years before release. It's this unusually long, careful maturation that gives the wine its depth and sense of place. The result is an Albariño built for contemplation rather than quick drinking: layered, saline, and textured, with the freshness of the Atlantic held together by real structure and length.
