Percheron Shiraz Mourvedre 2024 75cl
Percheron Shiraz Mourvèdre is a richly flavoured, smooth, and characterful red wine produced in the sun-drenched coastal and inland valleys of the Western Cape, South Africa. Named in tribute to the sturdy Percheron draft horses that historically ploughed the Cape's rugged vineyard soils, this wine stands for authenticity, honest craftsmanship, and outstanding value. Combining the lush dark berry fruit and spice of Shiraz with the deep, savoury backbone of Mourvèdre, it delivers a wonderfully balanced Mediterranean-style blend with classic South African warmth.. Why You'll Love It. This wine stands out for its generous dark fruit core, supple mouthfeel, and comforting spicy complexity. Sourced from dry-farmed vineyards where warm sunny days are tempered by cool coastal ocean breezes, the grapes ripen slowly to achieve full phenolic maturity without losing their bright freshness. Crafted to be effortlessly enjoyable, it offers an alluring array of crushed blackberries, dark plums, and black pepper, layered with subtle notes of wild herbs and cocoa, supported by soft, rounded tannins that make it remarkably easy to enjoy.. Vineyard & Production. The grapes are hand-selected from low-yielding, dry-land vineyard blocks planted on weathered granite and shale soils across the Western Cape. The fruit is harvested at optimal ripeness and brought to the winery for gentle destemming and crushing. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with regular pump-overs to extract rich colour and smooth tannins gently. A portion of the wine is aged in seasoned French oak barrels to impart delicate structural complexity, while the remainder is kept in stainless steel to preserve pure fruit expression prior to final blending and bottling.. Tasting Notes. In the glass, it presents a deep, dark ruby-red colour with vibrant purple reflections at the rim. The nose is warm, expressive, and spicy, bursting with aromas of ripe blackberries, dark cherries, and plums, layered with notes of cracked black pepper, dark chocolate, sweet spice, and a hint of savoury dried fynbos herbs. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, smooth, and rounded, offering succulent dark fruit flavours framed by fine, velvety tannins and a gentle touch of acidity that carries through to a long, satisfying finish.. Perfect Pairings. With its lush dark fruit, warm spice, and smooth tannin profile, this South African red blend is a fantastic match for hearty dining and casual barbecues. It pairs magnificently with grilled ribeye steak, slow-cooked beef stews, roasted lamb chops with rosemary, and barbecued pork ribs. It is also an excellent partner for venison burgers, rustic sausage casseroles, wild mushroom pasta, and mature cheeses like cheddar or Gouda.. Grape Varieties. Shiraz, Mourvèdre
