Alpha Zeta "R" Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso, Veneto, Italy A superb example of modern Ripasso, Alpha Zeta's "R" combines the bright, juicy character of Valpolicella with the richness and depth gained through the traditional Ripasso method. Crafted in the hills of the Valpantena Valley near Verona, it offers remarkable concentration and value while retaining freshness and elegance. Producer: Alpha Zeta, a project established by Master of Wine David Gleave and New Zealand winemaker Matt Thomson, focused on producing modern, fruit-driven wines from the hills north of Verona in Veneto. The fruit for the Ripasso comes primarily from hillside vineyards in the Valpantena Valley, where chalky soils and cool breezes from the Dolomites help preserve freshness and aromatics. Tasting Notes Appearance Deep ruby red with garnet highlights. Nose Rich and expressive, bursting with aromas of ripe red cherries, black cherries and dried fruits. Layers of plum, spice and subtle chocolate notes add complexity, while the Ripasso process contributes a characteristic dried cherry intensity. Palate Full-bodied and velvety, with flavours of black cherry compote, red berry fruits and hints of sweet spice. The wine balances opulent fruit richness with supple tannins and vibrant acidity, creating a smooth, rounded texture. Finish Long and satisfying, finishing with a distinctive bitter-cherry twist that is typical of the finest Valpolicella wines. Winemaking This wine is produced using a modern interpretation of the traditional Ripasso technique. Fresh Valpolicella wine undergoes a secondary fermentation with dried grapes, enhancing body, richness and complexity while maintaining freshness. The wine is then matured in oak before bottling, adding further depth and structure. Vineyard & Region The vineyards lie at 200-300 metres altitude in the Valpantena Valley, north-east of Verona. Cooling breezes descending from the Dolomites help preserve freshness and aromatic intensity, while the area's chalky soils encourage low yields and concentrated fruit flavours. Crafted from the traditional grape varieties of Valpolicella, led by Corvina with smaller proportions of Rondinella and Corvinone. Corvina delivers vibrant cherry and plum flavours, Rondinella adds fragrance and softness, while Corvinone contributes depth, spice and structure, creating a rich yet elegant Ripasso with exceptional balance.
